Excerpt: A woman suspected of locking her 9-year-old granddaughter in a closet for days at a time has been charged with child abuse, authorities said Wednesday.
Tammi Underwood, 42, of Atascadero was charged March 26 with felony child endangerment, according to court records. She is being extradited from Oregon and is expected to be arraigned within the next several weeks.
Underwood was arrested last week in Roseburg, Ore., with the help of authorities there, police said. She is being held in Douglas County on $100,000 bond until she is returned to San Luis Obispo County.
Underwood is suspected of depriving the girl — whom police did not identify — of food, water and use of the bathroom. She is also suspected of physically abusing the girl, Atascadero police said.
County Child Welfare Services officials have taken the girl and Underwood's two children, ages 13 and 5, into protective custody and plan to place them into foster care or with relatives....
